Aria is a professional mermaid at an aquarium. She wears a fake tail and performs for visitors. All her life, she has been in love with the mythical creatures, but her whole world is turned upside down when they turn out to be more than myths and she gets caught in the middle of feuding cities from deep under the sea.

William, Meredith, Jake, Henry and Josie are runaway foster kids who live in an abandoned apartment in Asheville. They steal what they need to survive, but, one night a strange girl named Katherine helps them. She convinces the children to let her stay the night with them and before they know it they are being whisked away into her world, a land called Mirra. A place where the sky is a rainbow, mushrooms taste like bananas and giant serpents burst out of the ground to devour them. As soon as they get there, their lives are in danger and she tells them they must get to the Blue Palace as quickly as possible. With no better alternatives they follow the Katherine, but even she isn’t sure if they will make it there in one piece.
The group decided to help Mirra, but they have no idea what that means. As they are trying to figure it out, they meet Azazel, a servant to the shadow master with ties to the royal family. After he puts the city in jeopardy, the group must travel to retrieve a stone that could set things right, but do they know the shadow master's true intentions? A dark prophecy forces them to question what the Lights might have in store for them and the people of Mirra and they have to decide what's right before all is lost.
